Taking your dog to European Union

EU countries share common rules: microchip, rabies vaccination and an EU animal health certificate.

Last checked October 2026

What you'll usually need

  1. ISO microchip, implanted before the rabies vaccination.
  2. Valid rabies vaccination.
  3. EU animal health certificate signed by an official vet.
  4. Some countries (e.g. Ireland, Finland, Malta) also require tapeworm treatment.

Travelling from South Africa

From many non-EU countries, including SA, a rabies antibody test and a 3-month wait are usually required.
